In most cases, only one channel can be transmitted at any given time (though some systems are capable of carrying more than one – see “traffic multiplexing” below).ĭe multiplexing is achieved by combining several streams into one using an audience-based coding scheme called progressive encoding or progressive decoding. By contrast, in consumer-grade analog television systems, multiple channels are transmitted by means of separate cables or coaxial cables, making them incompatible with each other. This allows the transmission to be carried out at high speed while preserving picture quality. The actual transmission of video is a process which involves generating and transmitting multiple copies of a source video frame (or stream) over an IP network, typically using a technique called inter-buffer space coding (IBSC).
